Great article! Were they an ordinary team that came together to do extraordinary things. Did Ware's injury hive them the power? Or is Loiusville not glamorous enough to get the attention they deserve? Who really has the final say?

It just seems odd that this practice only seems to come up when it is in regard to IU. It is practiced (although very quietly) by a great many other schools. And it is not a new practice, having seen it done to some degree for over 40 years. The question people are missing is that it is the NBA and constant practice of players jumping from college to the pros after a year or two that really creates this situation. Make sure players need to stay in school for at least 3 years and a lot of this "over-recruiting" will disappear. Coaches and schools have invested huge amounts of time and money recruiting many of these players and with nothing to stop them from going pro at any time after one year puts the coaches and schools in a very tough predicament. Remember Coach Crean has stuck with players that have had debilitating injuries that have kept them on the bench for extended periods of time and not forced them out. (Derrick Elston and Maurice Creek) That was a practice that was sometimes used years ago, again fairly quietly. Just as many people seem to think there is some bottomless pocketbook that they should be using to pay athletes, many people seem to think there is a bottomless pile of cash to keep recruiting players and a bottomless supply of talent out there. You only need look at the coaches released recently at the D1 level to see that coach's jobs are far from secure so taking a year off so that you don't over recruit and then lose a top tier player or two in one year is risky. Neither Universities nor their fans are very forgiving when it comes to wins and losses not matter what they say about "being fair" and being "truly honest" with recruits. Some recruits and potential recruits may get upset with the practice but the best high school players will push a school down on their list if they can't keep winning too.

I agree with your comments about playing Hulls and Ferrell together. When your backcourt is outscored something like 38-0, it's obvious there was a problem. As for the Syracuse zone, Michigan hit enough 3-point shots to stay in the game. IU didn't, and that comes back at least in part to the height of the guards. Finally, there''s no way Zeller won't go in the top 10 of the draft; insider projections say he'll go in the second five, that he's read to make the jump, and that his long-range projection is very good as soon as he learns to play facing the basket.

Cody should have shot the ball from 5 feet out all year but drove to the basket with shoulder down hoping to get a call and did not most of the 2nd half of the season. All we read off-season was how his shot was improved and he would shoot the jumper and he did not do it...what 10 times all season? I love Zeller but if he leaves this year he will get his ass kicked in the nba!
