Fleetwood shines for field hockey

IU field hockey star Morgan Fleetwood loves Chipotle burritos.

But the only thing that can make Morgan Fleetwood happier than a Chipotle burrito after practice is scoring a goal.

This season the redshirt junior forward has done an admirable job of putting points up on the board, and giving her team plenty of opportunities to win. Morgan is known off the field by her teammates as having a vibrant personality and always providing the team with smiles and laughs, but once she steps onto the field she is all business.

“She’s one of the strongest, fastest, hardest players you’ll find to play against but she needed to learn the game and see it.”

Coming from Freeburg, Pennsylvania, Morgan knew she could easily call Bloomington home after visiting the campus and getting to know the coaching staff. Morgan, a team player at heart, has no better experience than scoring a goal and transferring her own immense energy to her teammates.

“There’s one way to get a smile on her face, it’s for her to finish a game and having been on the end of putting that ball into the back of the net,” said coach Amy Robertson.

Morgan made her first appearance as a Hoosier September 6, 2008 against Missouri State. However, early into the game she suffered an injury that sidelined her for the rest of the season. She was granted a medical redshirt, limiting her to only be able to practice with the team once she was recovered from her injury.

“I learned a lot while I sat out,” Fleetwood said. “So that helped me into the next year being able to come in and not be behind.”

Coach Robertson also agreed her star forward needed time to prepare not athletically, but mentally.

“Her development hinged upon her becoming a smarter player,” Robertson said. “She’s one of the strongest, fastest, hardest players you’ll find to play against but she needed to learn the game and see it.”

With her vocal leadership, knowledge of the game and natural strength and speed, Coach Robertson believes Fleetwood is “coming into her own this season.”

On the field, Morgan is a very intense player who does not have a problem demanding more from her teammates. But she says her teammates are always there to help each other out to get better as the team knows they have important matchups coming up against the always competitive Big Ten conference.

“We love a challenge and we love playing Big Ten teams because the conference is so strong,” Morgan said. “It’s always a challenge but we’re definitely up for it.”

Their next opponent is against Northwestern, a team Coach Robertson believes matches up well against the ladies in Crimson and Cream. The Hoosiers go into Friday’s first conference game with a 6-2 record, 4-0 at home.
