Running Diary: 2011 NFL Combine

There’s a lot of down time at the NFL Combine, especially when there’s only three IU players (James Brewer, Tandon Doss, and Terrance Turner) to cover. So, here’s a running diary of some of the things that are going on in Lucas Oil Stadium over the next few days.

11:25- Just arrived at the Luke. John Harbaugh is on the podium, as his brother Jim walks in to observe. Where is Tom Crean to make this a family reunion?

12:20- Courtney Cronin just arrived. She was awestruck by John Clayton.

12:48- 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is now at the podium. Staying true to his “Captain Comeback” nickname, the ex-Stanford head coach looks to turn around a 49ers franchise that has struggled in the past decade. ” We were a 6-10 ball club last year, we’re not looking to go 8-8 next year. We’re looking to make the jump and go all the way to the Super Bowl like every other team in the National Football League.”

2:03- It’s been a slow lunch hour here at the combine. The ham sandwiches on marble rye weren’t bad. Speaking of ham sandwiches, I can’t wait until 3:30 when Rex Ryan meets with the media.

3:22- Still no sign of James Brewer, hopefully the NFL combine media staff will have him out by 4. In other news, it’s become my belief that in order to save money for Super Bowl XLVI, Jim Irsay has turned the heat off inside Lucas Oil Stadium. It’s FREEZING in here. Rex Ryan should be in here in a few.

3:39- Rex Ryan is at the podium, sounding like another notable New York Jet, Joe Namath: “I feel this is the year we will win the Super Bowl. Fact is, I thought we’d win it the first two years, but I guarantee we will win it this year.”

Football wasn’t all Ryan had to talk about, he also talked about his appearance on CSI: New York: “It was a blast. It was a lot of fun… I totally blew a line once, a bus went by and I exploded. I was just like ‘You gotta be kidding me.’ I got stuck in the cab one time, but other than that, it was a great experience for me.”

4:00- That concludes my day here at Lucas Oil Stadium. Click back here tomorrow for day two, and follow @IUSportcom on Twitter as Josh Bowles will be tweeting from here.

Day 2

11:35- There’s more media here at Lucas Oil Stadium today, and rightfully so. Today, quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers meet the media today.

11:57- I’ll be talking with ESPN’s draft guru Todd McShay in about ten minutes about IU wide receiver Tandon Doss.

12:34- Todd McShay says Doss has the best hands of any receiver in the draft outside of Georgia’s AJ Green. He also projects Doss to go early in the second round.

12:52- Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt on evaluating quarterbacks at the combine: “You can evaluate talent, but there’s a lot of talented guys that don’t make it in this league. There’s got to be something said about how you study and how you prepare. Things don’t always come up the way you prepare, in fact, there are very few times they come up the way you prepare for them to. You have to be able to adjust. You have to be able to understand where your next read is and what the defense is trying to do to you. That’s an important part of playing the position, in my opinion. To me, that is the most important part of the evaluation.”

1:54- Another slow lunch hour here at the combine. Interesting note: Jack Del Rio and I have similar taste. We both ordered hot dogs at the concession stand. Groundbreaking.

3:08- Super Bowl Champion Mike McCarthy just addressed the media. The Packers head coach said the team’s offense needs to be better next season. “We need to score more points. I think the best offense in the league is the offense that scores the most points. That will be our number one focus. To break it down simply: we need to run the football better, pass-protect better, and get more production out of the passing game. We’ll go through our scheme evaluation like we do every year, that won’t change, but we plan on being a better offense next year.”

4:56- Another long day at the Combine is over. No show from Tandon Doss, hopefully we will see him tomorrow. Terrance Turner did meet with the media. He said IU’s offense is the reason he’s here; it really developed his game.

Day 3

10:25- Day three is underway at Lucas Oil Stadium. Quarterbacks Cam Newton and Ryan Mallett are scheduled to meet with the media today. Hopefully we will finally hear from Tandon Doss as well.

11:58- Cameron Heyward, Sam Acho, Ladi Ajiboye, and Marcell Dareus are among the players that we’ve seen today. We’ve been told Tandon Doss will be in soon.

12:15- Purdue DE Ryan Kerrigan is at the podium right now. He’s not as big as I imagined. I’ll refrain from asking him about his final Old Oaken Bucket game in order to remain objective.

2:06- Still no sign of Tandon Doss. Who thought waiting could be so exhausting? I need a nap.

3:03- Just spoke to Tandon Doss. Asked what impact the IU coaching change had on his decision, his IU tattoo, and the possibility of a draft day viewing party. We will have raw video of Doss up soon.

3:50- Cam Newton at the podium, 90% of the media follows him. Appears to be very good with interviews and answering media questions.

4:06- By the way, that last post was sarcasm for the Courtney Cronins of the world who don’t understand sarcasm. Newton never directly answered any questions, just gave the “I’ve moved on from my past” spiel for every answer.

4:16- Thanks for following along, my time at the combine is done. It’s been fun.
