The Indiana Track and Field team will be competing at two different track meets this weekend.
The distance and middle distance runners will be staying home for the Hoosier Hills Invitational, which will be the final home meet of the season. The sprinters and field event members will be going to the SPIRE NCAA D1 Invite.
At the SPIRE invite, the Hoosiers will possibly face their toughest competition all season. Some of the best teams in the country will be there including Florida State, Texas, Ohio State, and Auburn.
The invite will take place on an oversized 300-meter track and in a facility that has room for 5,000 spectators.
Triple Jumper Olu Olamigoke is ready for the challenge but knows he won’t be backing down.
“It motivates me to have a great day but it more so motivates me to beat them,” Olamigoke said.
This will be another great stepping-stone for Olamigoke, as he is coming off of a PR jump last weekend.
Kind Butler and Kelsie Ahbe also look to perform well against the tough competition, as they are right near the top of the NCAA leaderboards.
With the distance and middle distance runners staying home this weekend, Head Coach Ron Helmer says this is the week that the team is going to load up the Distance Medley Relay (DMR).
“Friday night we’d love to run a great time,” Helmer said. “I hope that it’s a school record and we climb way up the all time list.”
Running that type of time will require the right carriers on the relay which is contingent on whether Andy Bayer is able to run his leg.
Coach Helmer wasn’t sure if Bayer would be able to run but said that he would still put a relay team together this weekend.
“If not all carriers are ready to go, then we’ll put the best team that we can that will still get us an automatic qualifier,” Helmer said.
The men’s DMR will run at 5:50pm on Friday evening.
Andrew Poore will be running the 3k and looking to run an automatic qualifying time to get him into the NCAA championships. Running the time would require Poore to take about a second off his PR and get down to 7:52.
This will be the Hoosiers last meet before they begin the Championship portion of their season and then they move outdoors.
The team will look to follow up a very successful last weekend and continue their hot streak.
