This past week the state of Michigan had two teams make statements about their status as serious contenders in the Big Ten, as well as the NCAA tournament.
In the past two weeks, Michigan and Michigan State fans saw both teams defeated Ohio State, one of the top teams in the nation. With these kinds of wins, Both the Wolverines and Spartans are bolstering their already impressive resume.
Michigan State has won five straight games including wins over three ranked teams, (at the time) No. 22 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State, and No. 17 Wisconsin. Michigan State has been able to work its way into the top 10, No. 6 specifically, in the nation despite playing in one of the toughest conferences in the country.
Currently, with Ohio State losing two of its last three games, Michigan State has set itself up for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Analysts are now recognizing that with key wins and impressive recent play, the Spartans need to be taken very seriously and could be a force to be reckoned with come March.
Michigan State has an impressive 22-5 record and 11-3 in the Big Ten. However, the Spartans face a tough final two games against No. 24 Indiana in Bloomington, and their season concludes with a showdown against No. 9 Ohio State at home.
These two games could very well determine whether or not the Spartans receive a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Likewise, Michigan has also raised some eyebrows with the way they have played recently.
Michigan has won four of its last five games with key wins coming against then No. 20 Indiana and No. 6 Ohio State. Michigan holds a solid 20-7 record and 10-4 in the Big Ten.
Michigan has performed stellar at home, but the big question remains: can they win on the road? While six of their seven losses have come on the road, the Wolverines are surging at the right time, and are set up to get a No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Both Michigan and Michigan State have made a lot of noise coming up on Selection Sunday.
Being in the Big Ten, one of the toughest conferences in the country, these teams have to grind it out each night to pull out the wins and stay among the top contenders in the nation. Only time will tell if they can rise to the challenge and make a run when the Madness of the NCAA begins in March.
