The Indiana Hoosiers men’s golf team (No. 34 Golfweek-Sagarin/No. 35 Golfstat) wasn’t about to let a little bit of bad weather get to it this weekend at the Indiana University Golf Course. Three Hoosiers were able to finish the 54-hole tournament below par to help lead Indiana to a third consecutive adidas Invitational title.
Thunderstorms kicked off day one, delaying play till later in the afternoon but that didn’t affect the Hoosiers. The Indiana A and B teams both finished under par, leaving them as the top two teams after the first day.
Junior David Erdy led the Hoosiers’ A team with a 3-under 68, good enough for third and just two off the pace of leader Kent Monas of Cleveland State University. Junior Chase Wright and freshman David Mills both fired 2-under par rounds of 69 for the Indiana A team.
The highlight of day one was from sophomore Michael McGee, who finished with a career-best 3-under round. McGee had eagles on the Par-5 1st and 9th holes. Senior Ben Bellville fired a career best 1-under par for the Indiana B team.
Teams were supposed to play 36 holes on Saturday, but due to the weather delay both the second and third rounds were played Sunday.
By the end of the final round, not much had changed at the top of the team standings as the Indiana A team ran away with the team title for the third straight year. The Hoosiers finished at even par in the team standings, 15 shots better than runner-up Cleveland State University. The Hoosiers A squad never trailed in the tournament.
Indiana was led by Junior David Erdy, who finished with a three-round score of 210 which put him at 3-under par and a second-place individual tie. David Mills and Chase Wright both finished 1-under par for the Hoosiers.
The Indiana B squad finished at 21-over-par placing them fifth among the 15-team field. Sophomore Kyle Perry paced the Hoosier B squad with an even par tournament leaving tied for ninth individually. Perry had 12 birdies through the three rounds.
Tyler Merkel of Ball State was the individual medalist with a three round score of 209 for 4-under par.
The Hoosiers return to the links again next weekend at the Illini Spring Classic in Urbana, IL.
